The board of education employs substitute teachers to supervise students and to follow the daily lesson plan provided by a regular classroom teacher who is unable to be present in his/her class. Individuals wishing to be employed as a substitute teacher must be annually approved by the board for inclusion on the district’s master list of substitute teachers. Only individuals on the district’s approved substitute list will be employed by the district. All substitute teachers will be paid at the board approved substitute rate of pay set out below.

Prior to employment with the district, a substitute teacher shall be required to undergo a background check pursuant to the board’s policy governing criminal records searches, subject to applicable exceptions under the law.

The number of days an individual may substitute teach within the district shall be limited as follows:

1. A maximum of 135 school days during a school year if the individual does not have a current or lapsed/expired teaching certificate or the minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Such individual may spend a maximum of 135 school days in the same assignment;

2. A maximum of 145 school days during a school year if the individual has a lapsed/expired Oklahoma certificate or possesses a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Such individual may spend a maximum of 145 days in the same assignment; or

3. An individual who holds a valid Oklahoma teaching certificate may substitute an unlimited number of school days during a school year without limitation upon his or her assignment.

4. Any individual employed as a substitute teacher on a monthly or annual basis must hold a valid teacher certificate and have a written contract in the manner and under the same conditions as regular teachers.

The compensation for a substitute teacher shall be as follows:

1. An assignment up to 3.25 hours shall be paid $52.00.

2. An assignment over 3.25 hours shall be paid $104.00.

3. Bus Drivers who substitute in a classroom will be paid $16.00 per hour.

Substitute hours are 8:15am – 11:30am and/or 12:15pm – 3:30pm.
