Board Policy 1070

Code of Ethics

Directing the educational process of students is an ethical and moral responsibility. Each board member has authority only when acting as a member of the Board in legal session. The Board is not bound by the statements or actions of an individual member except when such action or statement is in pursuance of specific instructions given by the Board and duly recorded in the minutes.

We believe that the following statements are the core components of the ethical foundation for the Oklahoma CareerTech System. We subscribe to the following statements as standards for Northeast Technology Center Code of Ethics for the board and all employees.

I (will):

  1. Focus on the success of students and clients as the fundamental value upon which all decisions are made.

  2. Acknowledge that the System is accountable to the taxpayers and patrons of the local district and the State of Oklahoma.

  3. Understand that the role of the board of education is to set policy and direction for the school district, and the role of the administration and staff is to implement the policies of the board in a fair and consistent manner.

  4. Not use position or influence for any personal gain; and will avoid actions that create a conflict of interest and strive to avoid actions that might appear to create a conflict of interest.

  5. Fulfill professional responsibilities with honesty and integrity.

  6. Support the Constitution of the State of Oklahoma and the United States of America and obey all federal, state, and local laws.

  7. Encourage effective communication between the Board, the students, the staff, and all elements of the community.

  8. Improve professional effectiveness through continuing professional development.

Generally, the Board will be guided in its endeavors by the Code of Ethics suggested above and by the following guidelines:

  1. Matters that are clearly executive in nature should be referred to the Superintendent for decision and action.

  2. Official contacts between district employees and the Board should be made through the Superintendent’s office for approval by the Board as appropriate.

  3. To perform the task effectively each member should attend all meetings of the Board.
