Northeast Tech makes changes to practical nursing program orientation

Kiley Henderson and Ashalyn Roach, two students in the practical nursing (PN) program, work on their lab skills as part of their training at Northeast Tech’s Afton Campus. Beginning in February, the district will change the format of its orientation for the PN program, making it a monthly meeting that takes place at the district’s centrally located Administration OfficeWith the new year comes new changes to the orientation required for Northeast Tech’s practical nursing students. As one of the district’s most popular programs, the changes are part of an effort to standardize training across the district and better meet student needs.

“Currently, the orientation takes place across the district on a rotational basis on the Claremore, Pryor and Kansas campuses,” said Practical Nursing Coordinator Janet Trimble. “The Afton campus holds orientation monthly, January through May. In all cases, the material has been presented by faculty or administrative assistants.”

However, beginning in February the orientation format will change to a centralized location: the Administration Office, located on Elliott Street in Pryor. And rather than a rotation of staff members presenting the information, Trimble will assume the responsibility of leading the orientation sessions.

“This change will provide consistency in the materials which will be presented each time by the practical nursing coordinator and the financial aid staff,” said Trimble. “It will also allow students to have immediate, direct access to those individuals who can assist in answering any questions regarding the program or financial aid.”

Attending an orientation is a mandatory part of the enrollment process for the practical nursing program. All practical nursing students are required to attend the orientation in order to better understand the program before they begin the coursework.

“The orientation provides the students with guidance on what they can expect to encounter as a student at Northeast Tech,” Trimble said. “It also helps them determine if Northeast Tech will be a good fit for their educational needs.”

All those who attend the orientation are given a written proof of attendance to submit with their application to the program.  Application submissions should be taken to the campus of your choice.  You are allowed to be considered at more than one campus but must attend the campus where you are accepted throughout the programs entirety.

“It’s our goal to better meet the needs of our prospective students by providing a clear picture of the program and by defining our expectations,” said Trimble. “We are looking for dedicated, hard-working students to become successful nurses who will supply Oklahoma’s growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals.”

Northeast Tech’s practical nursing program is open to adults 18 years of age and older. The enrollment requirements and application can be found online at www.netech.edu. The next two scheduled orientations to be held in January are on Jan. 5 from 2-3 PM at the Afton campus and on Jan. 12 from 9-10 AM at the Claremore campus. The first orientation to be held at the Administration Office is scheduled for Feb. 2, from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
