Northeast Tech hosts College and Career Fairs

Sergeant First Class Alfred Butanda and Staff Sargent Adam Sloan visit with Northeast Tech students McKenna McElwain, Caitlin Lee, Brentnei Barbee and Megan Noviski at the district’s most recent College and Career Fair. Each year Northeast Tech hosts a College and Career Fair at each of its four sites – Afton, Claremore, Kansas and Pryor – and this year’s round of events kicked off at the Claremore Campus where more than 30 organizations came together to help Rogers County students plan their futures.

“I look forward to hosting this event every year, and every year I think we get a little bit better in what we offer to students,” said Northeast Tech Student Advisor Paula Reed. “This year we had 33 different organizations represented, and all of them had great information to share with our students.”

In addition to the 150 Northeast Tech students who were in attendance at the event, students from Claremore and Chelsea High Schools also stopped by.

“We always extend an invitation to our partner schools who might want to send their students to visit with the college recruiters, employers and military representatives who attend our event,” Reed said. “Parents are welcome to attend, as are families who choose the homeschool option. The event is always free and open to anyone interested in learning about their career and education options.”

Students who attend the fair walk away with plenty of freebies – lanyards, pens, flash drives, candy and more – but they also walk away with the information they need to plan their future, as well as the contact information they need to take the next step.

“One of the things we require our students to do when they attend the fair is to speak to every representative present, asking them at least three questions,” Reed said. “This forces them outside of their comfort zone, but it also leads them into a natural flow of conversation with the organizational representative. Often, they get answers to practical questions they would have never thought to ask.”

The next College and Career Fair will take place at Northeast Tech’s Afton Campus on January 24, followed by the Kansas Campus on January 25. Each event lasts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to the public.

“Our mission at Northeast Tech is to prepare individuals for successful careers, and this is just one of the ways we accomplish that,” Reed said. “Our students’ learning shouldn’t end when they leave us, and if we can help them make the connections they need to take their next steps, those next steps won’t be so scary.”
