“We’re excited to be one step closer to breaking ground on a new wing at our Kansas Campus,” said Northeast Tech Superintendent Fred Probis. “The 15,000 square foot construction project will allow us to implement a Cosmetology Program at that campus, and it will also give us a much-needed multipurpose space for the community.”

Northeast Tech’s Kansas Campus opened in 1996, and the campus currently offers six full-time programs during the day: Welding, Auto Service, Electrical, Health Careers, Practical Nursing, and the Business Administration, Multimedia and Graphics program, or BAMG for short. The site also hosts a number of Adult Education and Business & Industry courses throughout the day and evening hours.

The Campus Director, Greg Mitchell, is excited about the expansion for a number of reasons, chiefly of which is an increased level of service for the community.

“Our enrollment has been bursting at the seams for a number of years now, and adding a seventh program will enable us to serve more students in this area,” Mitchell said. “Beyond that, I think the multipurpose space will be well received by the community. We don’t have many facilities in this area that provide the space needed for community events, and we believe this will serve that need as well.”

The administrative staff at Northeast Tech will be working with Brewer Construction Company – the construction manager at risk for the project – as well as GH2 Architects of Tulsa to complete the addition.

“We are very excited to be a part of this project team and see this project develop from ideas and concepts from the completed Cosmetology program on the Afton Campus and now bringing that experience to the Kansas Campus,” said Chad Brewer, of Brewer Construction. “All the sub-contractors and suppliers are established and we are ready to break ground.”

Funding for the project comes from the district’s building fund, monies which are collected primarily through local ad valorem taxes, and the estimated price tag on the addition is $3.2 million. The construction timeline for the project has a targeted completion date of Fall of 2018, and all parties involved are hopeful the project will progress smoothly and according to plan.

“Construction always seems to go slower than desired, but we have a number of things working in our favor on this project,” Probis said. “First, we are working with proven experts in their fields – Brewer and GH2 – and in completing a similar facility at our Afton Campus, we have recent knowledge of this type of project.”

Officials at Northeast Tech are planning to host a groundbreaking ceremony in late September. The event will be a time for school staff and students, elected officials and members of the community to gather and celebrate the start of the new project.

“We want to be a hub of activity for this community. Without them, we wouldn’t exist,” said Mitchell. “This building will belong to them, and we want them to be part of this celebration.”
